I want a plant that will cover my gravel as a grassy sort of plant. I found Dwarf Hairgrass and Microswords. They are about 3-4 inch long. If i cut them to about 1-2 inch long will they still live? I heard about glosso and ricca but they require lots of ferts and lighting and high maitnence
Can i cut Dwarf hairgrass or Microswords to 1-2 inch long?
Generally, if you regularly trim foreground plants short, you'll encourage them to spread out horizontally rather than growing vertically. Same for mid-ground plants that you want to be compact %26amp; bushy rather than reaching for the surface.
Note that foreground plants actually do need more light since the amount of light that reaches the bottom is obviously less than for taller plants. It takes a bit more effort initially but you'll be rewarded when your foreground lawn really gets going.
Glosso is admittedly rather high maintenance. Riccia is actually quite adaptable, though more lighting will give better results. It was known primarily as a floating plant for a long time, it was aquarists like Takashi Amano's alternate use of it as a ground cover that popularised its use to cover bottom decor %26amp; substrate.
