Hi, we were wondering if its possible to simply transfer dirt onto existing blacktop. we would put about four inches deep and put up a retainer.
Can i plant lawn over driveway?
If you have someway of providing drainage for the dirt when it rains, then yes, grass will grow in such depth because their roots don't need much soil, but in heavy rain it will flood and then it will be all bad....
Reply:yes you wouldn't have very good drainage
Reply:Don't do it. No drainage and many species of grasses have roots that go deep. There's a fair chance you'll simply be redoing the lawn over the driveway at least once a year.
Removing blacktop and the substrate underneath isn't difficult. You'll want to break up the compacted soil underneath that before adding fill and planting.
